Let statistics from different countries would be comparable. In the European Union (EU), there are two classification systems in force – the European System of Accounts 1995 (ESA 95) and the EU Statistical Classification of Economic Activities (hereinafter referred to as NACE) – according to which it is possible to classify institutional units and economic sectors.

The NACE Rev. 2 classification was developed and approved by Regulation (EC) No 1893/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 20 December 2006 establishing NACE Rev. 2. statistical classification of economic activities, and amends Council Regulation (EEC) No 3037/90 and certain EC regulations on specific statistical domains.

NACE includes four levels and one intermediate level:

  • first level containing after names identifiable by an alphabetical code (sections);
  • an intermediate level containing names identifiable by a two-letter alphabetical code (subsections);
  • a second level containing names identifiable by a two-digit numerical code (chapters);
  • the third level, which contains names (groups) identifiable by a three-digit numerical code;
  • the fourth level, which contains names (classes) identifiable by a four-digit numerical code.

Economic activity is determined by the NACE level in stages – from the highest level (for example, in the case of financial and insurance activities, it is Section K; see table "Financial and insurance activities") through the division and group level down to the class (for example, Class 64.91 - financial lease).
